The problem is a question that requires study, solution. There can be several problems. It is important to see the two and comment. It is important not to comment on the entire text, but on the problems that you stated at the beginning. What question should be chosen? It is important to choose the question on which the author ponders most and about which the position is clearly stated.

Reread how you marked the problem. If you use the form of a question, then the position should sound like an answer to a question. If you use the form of a problem, then this problem should sound as the designation of the author’s position. The author’s problem can be:

  • The problem of the moral strength of a person. (Why is the moral essence of a person often manifested in ordinary everyday situations?)
  • The problem of the development and preservation of the English language. (How is the English language enriched?)
  • The problem of human influence on nature. (What is the degree of human influence on nature and what are the possible consequences of this influence?)

For a writing evaluation of text, keep in mind that the comment from a simple retelling is different in that in retelling you say what the heroes are doing, and in the commentary, what the author is doing. This is the most important and complex point. It is important to reflect on some issues related to the text read: to whom is the text addressed?

While writing an evaluation paper, you should answer other questions as well. What is the relevance of the text? How does the author approach this problem? What is the category of the problem: moral, ethical, social, environmental, socio-political, philosophical, psychological? How much is this problem highlighted in the literature? Who of the authors touched it? How did the author approach his or her task? How does the author talk about the situation, and what does he focus on?

Here it is possible to turn to means of expressiveness, if they help determine the author’s position. What is the point of the writer’s view? Can the author show it through the eyes of the narrator, and does he/she speak for the hero? What mood does the author have while writing? What does he or she stress? What follows from this? What conclusions does the author bring us to?
