What Does Marijuana Do to the Body?

Marijuana, or the dried leaves of the cannabis plant, has long been used by humans for medicine, religious activities, and recreation for thousands of years. But despite the many controversies surrounding marijuana up to this day, people still continue to consume it. Given this scenario, what effects does cannabis use actually have on the body, and is it harmful or beneficial?

The most active chemical found in marijuana is called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which excites the pleasure centers of the brain, causing the “high” that users seek. Although the effects of THC depend on the potency of the cannabis strain, the mode of intake, and even user physiology, they generally range from pleasant (a relaxed mood and heightened senses) to unpleasant (temporary hallucinations, paranoia, anxiety, and panic attacks) (“How Does Marijuana Affect You?”).

The negative effects of using cannabis include breathing problems caused by coughing and phlegm caused by lung irritation, increased heart rate, which increases the chance of a heart attack, and risk of brain and behavioral problems for a developing fetus of pregnant women (“Marijuana”).

However, cannabidiol, or CBD, is another active compound present in cannabis known to counteract the effects of THC and is extensively researched for therapeutic use in a variety of conditions. This type of marijuana is generally referred to as medicinal cannabis. According to Bridgeman and Abazia, the therapeutic roles of CBD include preventing convulsions (antiepileptic), relieving anxiety (anxiolytic), calming psychotic conditions (antipsychotic), acting as an anti-inflammatory, and protecting neuron degradation (neuroprotective effects).

In conclusion, cannabis use has both positive and negative effects on the body, and they depend on a number of factors. Therefore, there is also a need to elaborate on those factors to accurately describe the harmful and beneficial effects of marijuana.
